This is why you should be adding purple potatoes into your diet

by JOE MARTINO

Most of us are used to seeing and eating the typical white or yellow fleshed potatoes. You may even eat sweet potatoes on a regular basis and so you might be accustomed to orange as well. But purple potatoes are certainly not as popular, although given the deep rich color of these potatoes, more of us should be familiar with these potatoes for the powerful nutrients they pack.

Image: unimelb.edu.au
Native to South America, purple potatoes got their name due to their deep purple skin and flesh. There are several types of the purple potato including the Purple Majesty, Purple Viking and Purple Peruvian varieties. Purple potatoes are rich in antioxidant phytochemicals and studies show that purple potatoes can aid in lowering blood pressure.

As with any fruit or vegetable, the deep rich colors they offer tell us how nutrient dense they are. When choosing which vegetables to add to our diet, a mix of colors is always a good rule of thumb to be sure we are getting a variety of nutrients to meet our bodies needs. Purple potatoes follow right along with this concept as the purple characteristic tell us that they are rich in a powerful antioxidant called anthocyanin. Coming from the flavonoid family of antioxidants, anthocyanin is best known for boosting the immune system and fighting cancer. You can also find this antioxidant in blueberries and pomegranates.

Another great benefit to anthocyanin is its ability to protect the integrity and structure of DNA and encourage the production of cytokines which are key in promoting proper immune response. If that isn’t enough, this powerful antioxidant also has anti-inflammatory properties, helps to protect the health and integrity of the capillaries and strengthens membranes. It may also play a role in regulating estrogenic activity which helps to lower the risk of hormone-related disease.

Lowering Blood Pressure

A study presented at the 2012 American Chemical Society National Meeting in Denver, Colorado showed that consuming purple potatoes lowered the blood pressure of the subjects who were eating them compared to subjects that were not. The effects on blood pressure are likely associated with the potatoes therapeutic effect on the capillaries and blood vessels as previously mentioned. It is also likely that purple potato’s feature a high concentration of another phytochemical called chlorogenic acid which has been linked to lowering blood pressure in mice.

Flavor & Cooking

Many of us love white potatoes and are accustomed to the texture and flavor they offer. Does the purple potato trade off any flavor or texture for the nutrient density? Not at all! The purple potato tastes very much like the standard white-fleshed potatoes and is said to be slightly creamier in texture.

When cooking purple potatoes, as with any other potatoes, try to keep the skin on and remember to cook them in the healthiest ways possible. keeping the skin on helps to keep moisture in the potato and is packed full of nutrients. The skin of the purple potato is rich in vitamin C and contains a lot of the polyphenols and potassium that makes it so beneficial. Baking and steaming are often the best methods of preparation and good clean oils like coconut oil are recommended if you are frying. Then again, you can always just take a bite straight out of one of these much like you would if you were eating an apple!

6 Foods That Naturally Lower Blood Pressure

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine

livelovefruit.com
If you suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension), or consume a diet which places you at risk for developing high blood pressure, you are at risk for experiencing heart attacks and strokes as well as kidney failure. Most people have high blood pressure and don’t even know it until they get a heart attack or stroke!

Consuming highly processed foods like fast food with incredibly high sodium levels are extremely damaging and is often the main culprit in raising your blood pressure. Another factor that puts you at risk for high blood pressure is fat – that is, the highly saturated and trans fatty acids which clog your arteries and make it hard for blood to flow freely through your veins, causing build-up and thus, high blood pressure.

Foods that help reduce high blood pressure

(1) Garlic

You can change your cholesterol levels and naturally lower your blood pressure levels with garlic! In fact, most members of the allium family (onions, garlic, leeks, etc.) have been shown to reduce cholesterol, high blood pressure and the flu. Countries who consume large amounts of garlic have also been correlated with the lowest levels of cardiovascular disease.

(2) Kiwi

A recent study in 2011 found that just 3 kiwis a day may naturally lower blood pressure (opposed to eating just one apple a day). The study took place over 8 weeks, and at the end of the study, individuals who consumed the kiwis had significantly lower systolic blood pressure than those who ate only 1 apple a day. Kiwis are lutein-rich (an antioxidant), which helps beat free radicals which are often linked to high blood pressure. Kiwis are also one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits, as reported by the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (along with grapes, and wild blueberries).

(3) Grapes

A study at the University of Michigan showed that grapes may help fight high blood pressure and heart disease (especially if you consume a salty diet). Grapes are incredibly high in antioxidants which fight off free radicals that normally lead to heart failure and hypertension. Grapes also lower inflammation in the body and allow the blood vessels to breathe and relax to prevent higher blood pressure.

(4) Leafy Lettuces

Eating green leafy vegetables on a consistent basis can help lower your risk for developing high blood pressure. Leafy greens are incredibly vitamin and mineral rich (with things like calcium, potassium, and manganese) which protects against heart disease and stroke. Lettuces are also nitrate-rich which has been linked to a reduction in blood pressure.

(5) Bananas

Bananas are very high in potassium which helps regulate blood pressure. Foods with potassium nitrate (like bananas and dates) have been reported to be even better than supplements using potassium chloride for lowering blood pressure, according to a UK study. Eating just two bananas a day can lower blood pressure by up to 10%!

(6) Watermelon

Citrulline in watermelon helps to normalize blood pressure. Eating up to 1/2 of a large watermelon per day can help lower high blood pressure, especially when the fruit is ripe, and when this antioxidant is at it’s highest levels. Citrulline is a type of amino acid that is converted into another amino acid, called Arginine (which people normally take to help lower their blood pressure). However, eating the more natural form of this compound is best, so make sure you eat the whole watermelon in it’s true, natural form!

Health Benefits of Kiwi

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine

                                                              What’s in a Name?
The kiwi, originally called the Chinese gooseberry and later the “sunny peach”, was renamed the kiwi by New Zealand natives after their national bird. There are over 400 varieties of this fuzzy fruit, which grows off of vines on a trellis, much like grapes are cultivated.

                                                            KIWI BENEFITS!

People are attracted to kiwi fruit because of its brilliant green color and exotic taste. But, the real uniqueness of kiwi fruit comes from its health benefits. Read the kiwi’s fourteen health benefits:.

1. Helps Your Digestions with Enzymes

Raw kiwi contains actinidain, a protein-dissolving enzyme that can help digest a meal much like the papain in papaya or bromelain in pineapple.

2. Helps Manage Blood Pressure

Kiwi’s high level of potassium helps keep our electrolytes in balance by counteracting the effects of sodium.

3. Protects from DNA Damage

A study showed that the unique combination of antioxidants in Kiwi fruit helps protect the cell DNA from oxidative damage. Some experts conclude this can help prevent cancer.

4. Boosts Your Immunity

Kiwi’s high vitamin C content along with other antioxidant compounds has been proven to boost the immune system.

5. Smart Carb for Weight Loss

Kiwi’s low glycemic index and high fiber content means it will not create a strong insulin rush like other fruit with high sugar contents — so the body will not respond by storing fat.

6. Improves Digestive Health

Kiwis are a great source of fiber. This prevents constipation and other intestinal problems.

7. Helps Clean Out Toxins

The fuzzy fiber of Kiwi helps bind and move toxins from your intestinal tract.

8. Helps Fight Heart Disease

Eating 2-3 kiwis a day has been shown to reduce the potential of blood clotting by 18% and reduce triglycerides by 15%. Many individuals take aspirin to reduce blood clotting, but this causes many side effects including inflammation and intestinal bleeding. Kiwi fruit has the same anti-clotting benefits with no side effects, just additional health benefits!

9. Suitable For Diabetics

Kiwi is in the ‘low’ category for glycemic index, meaning it does not raise your blood sugar quickly. It has a glycemic load of 4 which means it is safe for diabetics.

10. Protects Against Macular Degeneration and Other Eye Problems

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. A study on over 110,000 men and women showed that eating 3 or more serving of fruit per day decreased macular degeneration by 36%. This is thought to be associated with the kiwi’s high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin — both of which are natural chemicals found in the human eye. Although both fruits and vegetables were studied, this same effect was not shown for vegetables.

11. Create Alkaline Balance

Kiwi is in the ‘most alkaline’ category for fruits, meaning it has a rich supply of minerals to replace the excess of acidic foods most individuals consume. A few of the benefits of a properly acid/alkaline balanced body are: youthful skin, deeper sleep, abundant physical energy, fewer colds, less arthritis, and reduced osteoporosis.

12. Great for the Skin

Kiwis are a good source of vitamin E, an antioxidant known to protect skin from degeneration.

13. Exotic Taste and Look for Food Variety

Kiwis look and taste great. Kids often love them because they are so different from most fruits.

For nutritional balance it is always good to eat a variety of foods. Each food has its own unique qualities and powers. The trouble with most people’s diet is that we eat such a limited number of foods. It increases our chances of not getting enough of important nutrients.

14. Naturally Organic

Kiwi fruit is on the list of foods that are generally safe from a lot of pesticide residues. For 2012 it came in with the top 10 safest foods. While it is always good to support organic when you can as a matter of principle, it’s also good to know whether there is a big danger if organic is not available or viable for you.

Selecting, Storing, and Eating a Kiwi

How do I choose a kiwi?
-Look for a fruit that is plump and fragrant with no visible bruising or wrinkles and a slightly firm feel
What if I chose a fruit that isn’t yet ripe?
-Kiwis ripen quickly when placed in either a paper or plastic bag with a banana. However, once they are ripened, store them away from other fruit or they will decompose more quickly!
How long are kiwis good for once I buy them?
-Ripe kiwi fruit can last in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.
Can I eat the skin?
You can, but wash carefully to remove unwanted pesticides! Rub it a bit to minimize the fuzz. The skin actually provides more fiber to your sweet snack. If you’re not fond of the fuzzy exterior, simply “sloop” it out by slicing the kiwi in half horizontally and spooning out each end to enjoy.
The Kiwi Craze
Kiwi fruit can be enjoyed in smoothies, sprinkled into your morning yogurt, mixed into fruit salad, or eaten plain. For a few more creative ideas to incorporate kiwis into your daily meals, check out the ideas below:
-Make a “fruit pizza” out of graham crackers and a creamy topping (peanut butter, honey, ricotta cheese- the possibilities are endless!) and sprinkle chopped kiwi on top.

-Involve your kids and make fruit kabobs with kiwi as the star (Make sure to use blunt end skewers so the little ones don’t hurt themselves!).-

-Incorporate kiwi into a citrusy jam, jelly, or chutney.

-Rub on meat for an all-natural meat tenderizer- the kiwi contains enzymes that aid in breaking down protein.

Hibiscus Tea & Lower Blood Pressure

Chris Sumbs - UndergroundHealth.com

Is it possible that something as simple as hibiscus tea can lower blood pressure as effectively as pharmaceutical drugs?
Crazy as it sounds, the results of some controlled studies show Hibiscus tea to be as effective as many prescribed pharmaceuticals.

Hibiscus tea is a mega popular beverage worldwide. The ruby-colored, tangy drink is known as "Jamaica" in Mexico and also found in Red Zinger tea. Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa)has been for centuries by African and Asian as a medical treatment. In the late 1990s, Iranian researchers clinically demonstrated the effectiveness of this treatment.

For proof of its efficacy, two studies compared with hibiscus tea directly to pharmaceutical blood pressure drugs. In 2004, Mexican researchers assigned 75 adults with high blood pressure to take either 25 mg of a prescription blood-pressure drug twice per day, or to drink tea made from 10 g (about 5 teaspoons) of crushed dried hibiscus once per day. After four weeks, blood pressure had dropped by 11 percent in both groups. In 2007, the US researchers conducted a follow-up study, this time using a commonly prescribed blood-pressure drug as a comparison. Once again, hibiscus performed comparably to the drug, reducing blood pressure in hypertension patients in average of 14 percent, compared with 15 percent for prescription.

May also prevent high blood pressure, heart attacks

In a random, double-blind study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2010, McKay and colleagues assigned 65 adults between the ages of 30 and 70, all of them suffering from either pre-hypertension or mild hypertension, to drink 240 mL of either hibiscus tea or a placebo three times per day. None of the participants were taking any blood pressure drugs. After six weeks, systolic blood pressure dropped seven points in the hibiscus group, compared with only one point in the placebo group. Once again, the improvement seen was comparable to that provided by pharmaceutical drugs.

It’s been shown the even modest decreases in blood pressure can reduce the risk for heart attack and heart disease. The fact that a simple tea produces the same results as a costly pharmaceutical with virtually none of the side effects simply amazes me. This is further proof that pharmaceutical companies are simply out to make money and could care less about the health and well-being of the end users.

Garlic does more than you think!

Flavor doesn't even scratch the surface:

Used in food and medicine for several thousands of years, garlic is used across the world from Asia to South America.  Though the flavor is popular, studies are now showing that natural compounds in garlic have some potent healing effects.

Allicin, the super antioxidant:  Many experts agree that the main active ingredient in garlic is allicin.  Allicin is a compound that is created when you damage the cell walls of garlic cloves by chopping or crushing the garlic.  Studies have shown that allicin breaks down and rapidly interacts with free radicals in the body helping to prevent tissue damage in people who eat it regularly.  Allicin is also believed to have powerful antibiotic properties.

Garlic for your heart:  Heavy antioxidant activity in garlic helps protect against damage to tissue and prevent heart disease, but some studies even suggest that garlic can help prevent blood clots.  What's more, eating a bulb or two of crushed garlic daily can possibly help to scrub away plaque buildup in the blood vessels and reverse heart disease.

Fight cancer naturally:  Garlic has been shown to slow the spread of different types of cancers in studies on rats.  Since garlic helps to fight harmful free radicals, it lowers the risk of cancers developing in the body.  Some studies suggest that garlic contains compounds that stimulate production of anti cancer enzymes.  Garlic oil is also believed to shrink tumors.

Garlic is truly a wonder herb.  It has antiviral properties, anti fungal properties, fights bacteria, helps with cholesterol, manages blood pressure, and greatly boosts antioxidant activity in the body.  Remember that many experts are recommending 1 to 3 cloves of garlic a day, finely minced or crushed.  Although cooked and dried garlic is shown to have some of the same health benefits as fresh cloves, the potency is no comparison and fresh pulverized garlic is the best for healing.  To maximize the healing potential and get all the anticancer benefits, break down the clove finely and let sit for 10 to 15 minutes before consuming.  Mix with some olive oil and dip some gluten free bread into it for a great heart saving snack!

How parsley helps your health

Parsley has been cultivated for thousands of years and is a staple side garnish, but did you know it can help you stay healthy?

Parsley  has high levels of vitamin C, also known as the detox vitamin, which helps lower the risk of arthritis and other health problems related to tissue damage brought on by harmful free radicals in the body.  Parsley also contains iron, which is better absorbed into the blood thanks to the presence of vitamin C.  The combo of these nutrients helps to stave off fatigue and anemia while repairing blood cells and improving the health of blood vessels.  Oils like alpha thujene, myristicin,  and limonene contained in parsley help to prevent cancers in the body by working against carcinogens and could be helpful to people at a higher risk of cancer such as cigarette smokers.  If you have always viewed parsley as just a side garnish, it may be time to give the leafy green herb a try in the middle of your plate as part of the main course, or even the main part of a healthy crisp salad!

Here are a couple more health benefits and some fun facts about parsley:

-Digestion
