At some point near the middle of March, I always decide that I’m “done” with winter. The sweaters and jackets get pushed to the back of the closet, the flip flops come out, and I inevitably freeze my butt off for several weeks until the weather catches up with my warm-weather state of mind. Likewise, my cravings for fresh herbs and veggies are always a little ahead of the season.

Growing your own herbs is a great way to save money and avoid buying too much at a time and letting most of it go to waste. If it’s still too cold to plant outside where you are (or if you’re short on space!) this hanging herb garden is the perfect project to get you in gear for spring.

What you’ll need: Tin containers with snap-on plastic lids (tea, cocoa, and coffee cans are a good bet), coat hangers, pliers, scissors, herbs (I bought basil, rosemary, dill, and cilantro for about $2.50 each), masking tape, coffee filters, a nail, a hammer, X-acto knife, scrap fabric or paper, and glue or spray adhesive.

As food prices continue to rise and real organic food is not only hard to find but even more expensive than GMOs, urban homesteading and city gardening is becoming one of the only ways you can ensure you're not ingesting Monsanto's products. New techniques such as aquaponics and vertical gardening are making the dream or growing your own food in the middle of the city a reality. Even people without room in their own homes can join groups that do "urban sharecropping", a type of food co-op where you share land with people.

Some people, like Jules Dervaes of Los Angeles shown in the video below, are even able to produce an excess of organic food to sell and make a living from. There is a food revolution currently shaping up in the US and around the world thanks to the new ideas being brought to the forefront by pioneers like Jules and Will Allen of Growing Power . Combining these new ideas together with community gardening can change the way food is thought of and distributed. These are perfect ways to combat Monsanto, the food establishment, GMOs, and the epidemic of poor health in urban areas all at the same time. This is the food revolution.

Modern technology has brought us many benefits, including mosquito traps that cost hundreds of dollars, but sometimes we overlook simple solutions to difficult challenges such as mosquito control. When it comes to controlling pests, research tends to focus on chemicals or concepts that can be patented. Unless someone can make a profit from an idea, the public may never become aware of it.

3-D Printed Cast For Broken Arms

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine

3D printing is the process of making a three-dimensional solid object of essentially any shape from a digital model. It has been used to make jewellery to intricate toy models, and is now being utilized by the medical industry to construct 3D casts for broken arms. This means better air-flow and less hassle of trying to bathe with the conventional bulky fibreglass plaster casts used to treat broken bones.

The new 3D cast design was developed by Jake Evill, a graduate from the School of Design at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He named it “The Cortex” and looks like a labyrinth of spider webs weaved in a honeycomb-like design (something you’d almost witness in a sci-fi movie like Spiderman). This design is much more user-friendly, because it reduces the amount of weight required to carry around (conventional casts are rather heavy!).
The cast allows for ample air flow (meaning less odour buildup), and allows the wearer to itch themselves as much as they please (which is a majorly annoying feeling for those who have ever suffered a broken bone which required casting, such as myself).

This Cortex Cast fits in a similar way as other casts, with X-rays to determine bone fractures. Leon Benson, the spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, said that the network of holes is the major benefit of this casts structure, because it allows breathability, space to scratch, and is light-weight.
