Gardening and crime don't really sound like they go together, but when faced with an overbearing government bureaucracy anything is possible. This video is a prime example of what happens when the government gets out of control and the corporate grocery industry has it's tentacles around the local city politicians. Julie Bass was fined and charged with a misdemeanor for planting an organic garden in her front yard.

A more in depth look at Julie's situation

    6. When you look at the history of the front lawn..it was from French nobles thumbing their noses, saying I am NOT poor, I don't need to grow food. The fact that a city already strapped for cash is doing this is beyond dumb, senseless and silly.

    14. He needs to reconsider looking up suitable in Webster's....def 1. is an obsolete (and not the def he gave)

2a : adapted to a use or purpose
      b : satisfying propriety : proper
      c : able, qualified

As b and c obviously do not apply then I would say a is a perfect fit. She has made the plants suitable for human use.

  4. Absolutely ridiculous. It's certainly more attractive and useful than an unkempt lawn, and uses less water than a highly maintained one. If flowers are allowed, why not flowering plants that produce vegetables? Land of the free? This is overweaning big-nanny state politics. If anything, in this economy cities should be encouraging more pride in self-sufficiency!

Why should I waste gas to mow useless grass???? Julie should be left alone. The food she grows is being shared and kids are helping from the neighborhood. That is wonderful experience and education for those kids.

  10. What the hell is wrong with growing vegetables in your front garden? What kind of dumbfuck law is that? Anybody who finds a vegetable garden offensive is on the wrong fucking planet. It looks well maintained and orderly to me and it is entirely suitable, suitable to self sufficiency, suitable to feeding your family, suitable to potentially inspiring people who pass by to grow their own vegetables. Just because it's illegal doesn't make it wrong, similarly just because it's written as law doesn't make it right. Are we all to live in matching houses with uniform gardens, are we all to look the same, act the same, think the same, conform to somebody elses idea of what is 'suitable'? I'd rather fucking die. Whoever passed that law must have been an unimaginative moron who probably starches his fucking underwear to make sure its 'suitability' isn't marred by an errant crease. Leave the poor girl alone for fuck sake, it's a fucking vegetable garden, not a meth lab. Ffs.

This is a small issue but if you allow the government to control the small things, you're leading the way for them to control our more important freedoms. So I commend Julie for standing up to them.

      [ obsolete : similar, matching ]

This guy is a wacko, who should have just turned down the case for something more meaningful.

  16. "we don't think it's suitable in OUR yards"... so what are you saying then? Are you saying that YOU have more jurisdiction in MY yard? Or that I don't OWN my yard? Or that a political subdivision has jurisdiction over the land?

Are you saying that YOU have the judicial capacity to practice law from a limited capacity? (show me) Does the tail wag the dog? (show me) Does the creation have more authority than the creator? (show me)

You guys need to wake the hell up! This is what you get for allowing them to govern your "mind" aka "govern-ment". They govern your mental faculty, because you don't know how to do it your selves. You play in their sand box, you must play by their rules.

You gotta understand, they don't OWN the land. NO ONE owns the land, they believe you are a "POLITICAL SLAVE" and rightly so. Since when do you know anything about law? So why are you politically swayed to believe anything they say in the first place? THEY are like the waves of an ocean, tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine. Were you not warned about them? Does your own law (bible) not say "They are liars, thieves and hypocrites"?

Does the law not say "He who knows not how to assert his rights has none" and "One who avails himself of the benefits conferred by statute cannot deny its validity" and "Any one may renounce a law introduced for his own benefit"? Do you not know "law is contract, contracts make the law, and consent makes the contract"?

The devil (THEY) are a roaring lion going to and fro throughout the earth seeking whom they may devour.

    You BETTER wake up.

    1. actually now they want to make water "not a human right" rain water is illegal to collect in most states and several people with artisan wells and natural aquafirs and streams on their grandfathered property are facing fines and jail times for having water on their property. and the amendments to the constitution also states that if we have anything the government needs or finds useful, esp in times of war (when is the US not at war with someone?) that they have full rights to come take it from us. the US government has already tried to pass several riders in recent bills over the last 10 years which would make it illegal for private families to grow their own food. their argument is that it is illegal importation of goods into the Us, that growing food is illegal because it is importing food. just what are they afraid of?

  22. Googled "suitable" -
suit·a·ble /ˈso͞otÉ™bÉ™l/ Adjective - Right or appropriate for a particular person, purpose, or situation.

    Synonyms - fit - appropriate - proper - fitting - convenient

The use of "suitable to mean similar" is considered OBSOLETE by Merriam-Webster Dictionary and is clearly marked as such. Here's the link: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/suitable - Please feel free use to dispute the City's NONSENSE in court. 1 Neighbor in 4 didn't like it. Boo-hoo. It's a well maintained garden. I guess if it was a "flower garden" that would be acceptable?! So then, it's not about "gardening" it's about what's "prettier". Yep, total waste of time and money by the City.

  45. Simple solution. The town councillor said, and is on record saying that "suitable" is "what is common", so everyone else in the town needs to plant a garden in the front yard.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Let me first say that I don't think what they (the city of Michigan) doing to this woman is ok.
That said, a front yard is not a good place for a vegitable garden unless you live where cars don't drive.
The exhaust fumes from cars are terrible for the system and cause all sorts of cancer and free-radical related issues.
Personally I live in the country, and we (my family) still keep our vegi-garden in the back yard. My personal experience with this is that when I was a kid I would pick blackberries, but I soon found out that the ones by the road tasted like aluminum. Sadly, I think I'm the only one in this entire comment stream who has applied some schepticism to this issue, nonetheless I think it's awsome that the woman is standing up to the bureaucracy even if she does get cancer. You should be informed though, go into the forest to find the best blackberries.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Y'all should know: GARDENS SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM ROAD TRAFFIC TO AVOID CONTAMINANTS.

Furthermore. Julie is awsome anyway. That county official is a dick, and the woman who said that "she could put it in the back yard" was right, but for the wrong reason. Julie, keep fighting, but don't eat those veggies.

It is a lot more environmentally friendly to use water on plants that grow food, so you don't have to use your pollution-producing combustion engine to go to the grocery store all the time, than to expend water and fertilizer and chemicals on maintaining the "common" lawn.

  62. Is it really true that no one noticed that this is actually something that happened 2 years ago (look at date of the first YouTube video)? The charges were dropped a week later.

Julie Bass summed the whole story up on her blog: http://oakparkhatesveggies.wordpress.com/about/

She also has a Facebook page which is still active: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Oak-Park-Hates-Veggies/184553881597878

The general issue seems to be quite broad, so even though this is "old news", it's just an example (seemingly the first one that got public) and probably that insanity is still happening ... and if it's happening near you, it would certainly be wise to step in and make sure that people trying to prevent others from growing their own food simply don't get through with it.

But be a little cautious with information. Everyone getting really upset about something that happened 2 years ago and no one pointing that out does leave a bit of a funny feeling. Is everyone asleep and dreaming?
