Top 10 Foods Highest in Iron

Iron's main purpose as a mineral circulates oxygen throughout the body. Iron deficiency, even a slight reduction, can cause anemia (fatigue/weakness), whilst more severe depletion can lead to organ failure. On the other hand, too much iron intake can lead to production of harmful free radicals, affecting heart and liver function and interfering with metabolism. However overdose is rare as the body is able regulate iron uptake and the harmful effects usually come from taking too many supplements. The safest and healthiest way to increase iron is by eating foods that are naturally rich with it. Iron is better absorbed from heme (meat) sources, but non-heme (plant) iron causes less damage to the body as it is easier to regulate. 18 milligrams (mg) is the recommended percent daily value. Below is a list of high iron foods. For more high iron foods see the lists of high iron foods by nutrient density, iron rich foods (heme and non-heme), and the list of fruits and vegetables high in iron.

Without enough Riboflavin you can't release energy from fat - carbohydrates and protein during metabolism. It's also used to change vitamin b6 and folate into forms the body can use.

#1: Yeast Extract Spread (Marmite) is a high protein food rich vitamin B1 (thiamin)  and a source of vitamin B12. In addition the spread is a good source of riboflavin (b2).

#2: Liver The liver of most any animal is packed with vitamin B2. Lamb liver provides the most riboflavin (B2). (Obviously not all of us eat meat)

#3: Dried Herbs, Spices, and Peppers are great. Add more dry herbs, paprika, or chili powder to all the dishes you eat. Dried ancho chilies contain the most riboflavin. Paprika follows then dried coriander, spearmint, parsley, and finally chili powder.

#4: Almonds Almonds are also a great source of vitamin E, calcium, protein, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and copper.

#6: Cheese (Roquefort, Brie, Limburger) Despite being a high cholesterol food, cheese is a good source of calcium, protein, vitamin B12, and vitamin B2. Roquefort provides the most riboflavin. Other high riboflavin cheeses are brie, Limburger, Camembert, Caraway cheese, Blue cheese, goat cheese, Romano, and finally Swiss cheese.

#7: Wheat Bran is high in fiber and is the top source of both vitamin b6 and magnesium. Wheat bran can most commonly be found in whole grain breads or bran muffins, but is also a great addition to hot breakfast cereals like oats, rye, and buckwheat. Crude wheat bran provides a great source of riboflavin.

Natural Treatments for Angular Cheilitis (Splits on the side of your mouth)

Angular cheilitis (also called perlèche, cheilosis or angular stomatitis) is an inflammatory lesion at the corner of the mouth, and often can occur on both sides. The condition starts as deep cracks or splits. In worse cases, the splits can bleed when the mouth is opened and shallow ulcers or crust may form. Angular chelitis may be caused by nutritional deficiencies, fungal infections, or (less commonly) bacterial infections. You should check with your doctor if to determine which problem you may have. Treatment for angular chelitis varies based on the cause of the condition.

Natural Treatments for Angular Cheilitis:

(Splits on the side of your mouth)

Causes: Although the sores of angular cheilitis may become infected by the fungus Candida albicans (thrush), or other pathogens, studies have linked the initial onset of angular cheilitis with nutritional deficiencies, namely riboflavin (vitamin B2) and iron deficiency anemia, which in turn may be evidence of poor diets or malnutrition (e.g. celiac disease)

So obviously you can get this condition for many reasons. If it's because you lack the proper nutrition you will most likely want to try some of this:

Increase your intake of these 3 vitamins and minerals:

Zinc deficiency is also associated with angular cheilitis. Angular cheilitis can also be a sign of anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa due both to malnutrition and as a side effect of constant vomiting.

Cheilosis may also be part of a group of symptoms (upper esophageal web, iron deficiency anemia, glossitis, and cheilosis) defining the condition called Plummer-Vinson syndrome (aka Paterson-Brown-Kelly syndrome). Angular cheilitis can be caused by bacteria, but is more commonly a fungal infection.

It can also be caused by medications which dry the skin, including isotretinoin (Accutane), an analog of vitamin A. Less commonly, it is associated with primary hypervitaminosis A, which can occur when large amounts of liver (including cod liver oil and other fish oils) are regularly consumed or as a result from an excess intake of vitamin A in the form of vitamin supplements. Treatment of angular cheilitis varies depending on the cause. For minor cases caused by bacterial infection, applying a topical antibiotic to the area for several days is sufficient to treat the infection and heal the lesions. Minor cases caused by a fungal infection can be treated by over-the-counter antifungal creams (e.g. clotrimazole)

Health benefits of taking naps!

Time to put the world on pause and take a while to recharge!

One of the secrets to long life that centurions share, besides a proper nutritional profile, is taking naps.  Naps seem to accompany success.  Some famous nappers include:  Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Ronald Reagan!

The hustle and bustle of business life can really tax the body and test the mind.  In the United States, sleep deprivation is prevalent.  The pressure to perform, make quotas, and deliver results often translates to very early mornings and late nights at the grindstone.  It seems that when productivity and earning needs a boost, the first thing to suffer is our sleep, but could that be more costly in the long run?  Studies show that the risk and seriousness of some diseases significantly increases when inadequate sleep over a long period of time is added to the equation.  It is thought that bad sleepers are more likely to have heart disease and even 5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who catch all their needed Zs.  There are many figures tossed out about how many hours of sleep you need every night, but it seems to hover around 7 or 8 hours from one expert to the next.  The best bet is to not let your nightly routine fall below 6 hours as deep cycle sleep, known as Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep, is crucial for brain function and we simply perform at a lower level mentally when we are behind on catching REM sleep.  If you can find a place where you will not be disturbed and get from 15 minutes to an hour nap, it can make a tremendous difference.  A NASA study concluded that naps could improve performance of pilots up to a whopping 30% and their alertness by 95%!  15 to 20 minute naps can have a huge impact on your health and sharpness, but if you are behind on sleep, try to take an hour.
