Anti-Depressant Use Linked to Type 2 Diabetes

People prescribed anti-depressants should be aware they could be at increased risk of type 2 diabetes, say UK researchers.
Image: www.bigthink.com

The University of Southampton team looked at available medical studies and found evidence the two were linked.

But there was no proof that one necessarily caused the other.

It may be that people taking anti-depressants put on weight which, in turn, increases their diabetes risk, the team told Diabetes Care journal.

Or the drugs themselves may interfere with blood sugar control.

Dr Matthew Hobbs of Diabetes UK
Their analysis of 22 studies involving thousands of patients on anti-depressants could not single out any class of drug or type of person as high risk.

Prof Richard Holt and colleagues say more research is needed to investigate what factors lie behind the findings.

And they say doctors should keep a closer check for early warning signs of diabetes in patients who have been prescribed these drugs.

With 46 million anti-depressant prescriptions a year in the UK, this potential increased risk is worrying, they say.

Prof Holt said: "Some of this may be coincidence but there's a signal that people who are being treated with anti-depressants then have an increased risk of going on to develop diabetes.

"We need to think about screening and look at means to reduce that risk."

Diabetes is easy to diagnose with a blood test, and Prof Holt says this ought to be part of a doctor's consultation.

"Diabetes is potentially preventable by changing your diet and being more physically active.

"Physical activity is also good for your mental health so there's a double reason to be thinking about lifestyle changes."

Around three million people in the UK are thought to have diabetes, with most cases being type 2.

Dr Matthew Hobbs of Diabetes UK, said: "These findings fall short of being strong evidence that taking anti-depressants directly increases risk of type 2 diabetes. In this review, even the studies that did suggest a link showed only a small effect and just because two things tend to occur together, it doesn't necessarily mean that one is causing the other.

"But what is clear is that some anti-depressants lead to weight gain and that putting on weight increases risk of type 2 diabetes. Anyone who is currently taking, or considering taking, anti-depressants and is concerned about this should discuss their concerns with their GP."

Here's how sugar suppresses your immune system

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine

Sugar suppresses the immune system. When you eat a big dose of sugar, like a bottle of Coke or a candy bar, you temporarily tamp down your immune system’s ability to respond to challenges. The effect lasts for several hours, so if you eat sweets several times a day, your immune system may be perpetually operating at a distinct disadvantage.

Sugar promotes inflammation. Inflammation, which is part of the immune response, is not always a bad thing. But eating sugar foods can fuel excessive, inappropriate inflammation that serves no useful purpose and actually promotes aging and disease.

Sugar suppresses the release of human growth hormone. You know those ads in in-flight magazines that show a super-buff guy, who, thanks to a radical anti-aging program, looks about 50 even though he’s approaching 70? He’s most likely injecting himself with human growth hormone. Of course, he’s also watching his diet, spending a couple of hours a day in the gym, and using lots of self-tanner, but there’s no doubt that the hormone shots have a lot to do with his physique. Although the effects can be dramatic, hormone treatments are expensive and risky, so I don’t personally recommend this course of action. But if you want to slow down the aging process, you definitely want to do what you can to naturally enhance your body’s production of human growth hormone. Avoiding foods that are high in sugar is a good way to do that. Exercising, healthy eating, and avoiding undue stress also help.

Sugar promotes glycation. Sugar molecules treat your body like a singles bar. Once they get into your bloodstream, they start looking around for things to hook up with, like attractive protein and fat molecules. The hook-up is known as “glycation” and like most hook-ups, the results aren’t pretty. These glycated molecules act like drunken sailors, careening around your body, breaking things and peeing where they shouldn’t. They produce toxic compounds called advanced glycation end products, or, AGEs. That is perhaps the most poetically-just acronym in biology, because AGEs essentially throw the aging process into fast-forward. And much of the damage done by AGEs is irreversible. If that doesn’t motivate you to walk away from the M&Ms, I don’t know what would.

Sugar raises insulin levels. An influx of sugar into your body will have a fairly predictable result: Your blood sugar levels will zoom up. Shortly after, your pancreas will release a bunch of insulin to help clear sugar from your blood into your cells. As blood sugar levels go down, insulin levels return to normal. But when you eat a lot of sugar, you’re constantly calling for insulin, and that can backfire in a couple of ways. Over time, it takes more and more insulin to get the job done. Eventually, your pancreas may just stop responding to the call. Congratulations, you’re now an insulin-dependent diabetic. And along the way, exposing your cells and organs to chronically high insulin levels accelerates the aging process.

Study finds a new application for marijuana: treating diabetes

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine

It seems that every week there is a new study being published on the positive health effects of marijuana and THC. In the latest study conducted between 2005 to 2010 on 4657 subjects, marijuana consumption was shown to improve people's health that were suffering from diabetes.

Image: http://www.hamppu.net/
The subjects of the study that used marijuana had better control over the blood sugar than non-users had. Remarkably, marijuana users were also shown to have a smaller waist line than non-users despite having a higher caloric intake. The finding is this study are making waves in the scientific community as more and more states move to decriminalize cannabis.

The federal government is still insisting that marijuana is a "dangerous drug" and mainstream media outlets are still towing the establishment talking point claiming that marijuana is a "gateway drug". However,  evidence proving that is is a false claim and even more evidence from countries that have seen drug use rates lower after decriminalizing all drugs bring to light the real agenda behind marijuana prohibition: Big Pharma, Big Food, and Big Government do not wan't this miracle drug out in the open for people to see it's wide ranging medical and industrial uses.

Foods That Fight Candida

Candida albicans is the most common form of fungal yeast infection.

This type of infection is called candidiasis, or more commonly known as thrush. The risk of developing thrush is greatly increased if you are pregnant, have diabetes, take antibiotics or have a weakened immune system.
Fortunately there are a number of great foods that have anti-fungal and anti bacterial properties to treat candida naturally. Many are great staple ingredients that can be added to any meal, or eaten on their own.
Antifungal foods:
Garlic, Coconut Oil, Rutabaga, Onions, Pumpkin Seeds and Olive Oil all in their own right contain anti-fungal  properties.
Detox foods:
Seaweed, Lemon and Lime Juice and Ginger all have the ability to remove toxins from the body and can help with pain and inflammation associated with candida.
The best way to have these foods is to use them in cooking, although it is possible to buy them in supplement form.

Proof That Soda Increases Risk of Diabetes

Drinking a can of sugar-laced soda a day will raise your risk of developing diabetes by 22%!

According to a new study just released evidence suggests that just one 12 ounce serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage can significantly raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

What’s interesting about this this is that since most of the research on the evil effects of soda has been done on people in the US, researches at the Imperial College of London set up to seek a link between soda consumption and Type 2 diabetes in Europeans as well.

The British researchers used 15 years of data compiled from over 27,000 people from seven European countries. Over that 15 year period, more than 40 percent of those people developed type 2 diabetes and those who said they consumed at least one soda or similar sweet drink showed an 18% higher risk of developing the disease! When they took out factors such as weight and body mass index, the risk rose to 22%!

Coincidentally, these findings were right in line with the US studies showing a 25% percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes when consuming one soda per day.

Surprising health benefits of avocado!

Who doesn't like a bit of guacamole?  Well it may turn out that there is much more to like about the super-fruit avocado than just the flavor!

Nature's health insurance!

Anti Cancer:  Avocados are a rich source of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that attacks free radicals in the body by blocking the absorption of certain fats in the intestines.  Scientists also suspect that avocados may be useful in treating viral hepatitis, a cause of liver cancer.

Helps Diabetes:  Avocados are absolutely packed with monounsaturated fats also known as "the good fat."  These fats actually help lower bad or LDL cholesterol and raise beneficial HDL cholesterol in the blood.  Cholesterol management is crucial for diabetes patients due to the heightened heart disease risk due to diabetes.  Monounsaturated fats may also help the body process insulin and glucose more readily.  Avocados also tout high levels of Vitamin E which is believed to reduce the risk of heart disease and nerve damage in diabetics.

Reduces Inflammation:  Since avocados remove free radicals, they prevent cell damage and reduce inflammation throughout the body.  Some even believe that consuming avocados regularly can slow the process of aging!

Remember that avocados can be incorporated into several recipes and even help you absorb more of the nutrients from the meals in which they are included and even aid in weight loss!  The darker part of the fruit closest to the skin contains most of the beneficial compounds so don't let any go to waste!   Oh yeah, plant the seed too.

Surprising healing properties of apples!

An apple a day could literally keep the doctor away.

Apples are delicious and refreshing fruits that are used in a variety of dishes or enjoyed right off of the tree.  Though apples and their juice is loved for the sweet amazing flavor, the impact that apples have on your health may be surprising as well.  Nutrition is nature's health insurance!

  • Weight loss:  A study out of Brazil concluded that women who consumed 3 apples or pears a day and dieted lost more weight than women who dieted and didn't eat the fruit.
  • Breast cancer prevention:  A Cornell University study found that rats fed apples every day had a decreased chance developing breast cancer.  The greater amount of apples the rate were fed, the lower the risk of breast cancer.
  • Alzheimer's prevention:  A Cornell University study on mice found that the quercetin in apples may protect the brain from the type of free radical damage that could cause Alzheimer's disease.
  • Bone protection:  French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and could increase bone density as well.  Apples also contain boron, another bone strengthening compound.
  • Diabetes management:  The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body's need for insulin and could aid in the management of diabetes.
  • Asthma:  A recent study concluded that children who consume apple juice daily suffer from the symptoms of asthma less than those who did not.  Another study showed that children born to women who consume a lot of apples had a lower rate of asthma than those born to mothers who ate less apples.

Health benefits of taking naps!

Time to put the world on pause and take a while to recharge!

One of the secrets to long life that centurions share, besides a proper nutritional profile, is taking naps.  Naps seem to accompany success.  Some famous nappers include:  Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Ronald Reagan!

The hustle and bustle of business life can really tax the body and test the mind.  In the United States, sleep deprivation is prevalent.  The pressure to perform, make quotas, and deliver results often translates to very early mornings and late nights at the grindstone.  It seems that when productivity and earning needs a boost, the first thing to suffer is our sleep, but could that be more costly in the long run?  Studies show that the risk and seriousness of some diseases significantly increases when inadequate sleep over a long period of time is added to the equation.  It is thought that bad sleepers are more likely to have heart disease and even 5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who catch all their needed Zs.  There are many figures tossed out about how many hours of sleep you need every night, but it seems to hover around 7 or 8 hours from one expert to the next.  The best bet is to not let your nightly routine fall below 6 hours as deep cycle sleep, known as Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep, is crucial for brain function and we simply perform at a lower level mentally when we are behind on catching REM sleep.  If you can find a place where you will not be disturbed and get from 15 minutes to an hour nap, it can make a tremendous difference.  A NASA study concluded that naps could improve performance of pilots up to a whopping 30% and their alertness by 95%!  15 to 20 minute naps can have a huge impact on your health and sharpness, but if you are behind on sleep, try to take an hour.

The Top 10 Worst Sources Of Aspartame

This ingredient is the most contested FDA approved substance in history.

  1. Chewing Gum -
  2. Flavored water
  3. Sugar-Free Products
  4. Drink Powders
  5. Cooking Sauces
  6. Childrens medicines
  7. Cereals
  8. Yogurts
  9. Diet Sodas
  10. Tabletop sweeteners

There is nothing sweet about this artificial sweetener!

Did you know that aspartame can mix with other chemicals such as monosodium glutamate and cause even worst reactions within the body?  Aspartame has been linked to several different cancers and even degenerative brain conditions.  Consuming aspartame regularly will burn out neurons and has been linked to headaches, mood alterations and even brain tumors.  Although it is touted as a healthy and sweeter alternative to sugar, this chemical actually causes diabetes and may also cause obesity.  If you are surprised than maybe consider the fact that aspartame was developed in a bio-weapons lab!  And what's more, part of the process for manufacturing aspartame is to harvest excrement from bacteria and treat it with more chemicals.  Unfortunately this chemical, originally sold by Monsanto Corp, is now being re-branded under different names to avoid the reputation behind the poison.  There are currently efforts underway to include aspartame in milk without labeling it, even though aspartame is contained in many products already that do not list it as one of the ingredients.  Next time you are shopping, be weary of "light" or "diet" products in the grocery isle, and make sure you check the ingredients.

Rumble in the jungle: Cocoa vs Cacao!

No, they are not the same thing!

What do you know about the nutritional and healing qualities of raw cacao?

File:Theobroma cacao fruit, Botanical Garden, Hamburg IMG 1548 edit.jpgChocolate has been promoted by health experts for years as having health benefits.  Studies conducted on people who consume chocolate vs. those who do not showed a much lower instance of illness for those who consumed chocolate regularly.  In fact, a Dutch study indicated that the more chocolate eaten, the better for health.  Now, consider the fact that when you process chocolate, you destroy much of the nutritional value that was originally within the unprocessed beans.  Heating chocolate causes the omega 6 fatty acids present to go rancid and cause inflammation.  If you eat raw unheated cacao, there are a scope of advantages over eating a processed chocolate bar.  Bad associations with chocolate are due to health problems which are usually caused by other ingredients that are added to chocolate candy.  Sugar, milk, and other fillers cause cavities and weigh gain.  Raw cacao also has loads more antioxidant power than processed chocolate and helps regulate blood sugar which is a big plus for people who have diabetes.  Dark chocolate antioxidants have been shown to even dissolve the plaque that is deposited on the inside of blood vessels which reverses heart disease and also lowers blood pressure.
