Family Moves to Colorado to Cure Daughter's Epilepsy with Marijuana


With their daughter’s life on the line, they decided to leave.  They moved to Colorado where the highest profile success story for the treatment of epilepsy with marijuana had recently taken place.  Once skeptical of medical marijuana themselves, they left their home, friends and family behind to pursue a possible treatment for their daughter, who had been suffering nearly 300 spasms a day – with episodes lasting up to half an hour – since she was six months old.  They’d had no success with any other treatments.

The marijuana is administered in oil which Piper eats, and her seizures have now reduced in severity and frequency to a handful of single spasms per day.  The results so far have been life changing for Piper and multiple children in her same situation.  Organizations in Washington have had similar success using a tincture of marijuana with the THC removed.
Medical marijuana has also had unprecedented success in treating pain from cancer, fibromyalgia and other chronic diseases and conditions.  Unlike opiates – which are made from the same plants as heroin – it shows no real signs of being addictive, especially with the THC removed.  Unlike acetaminophen, it doesn’t pose a risk to the liver.  Though medical marijuana is a controversial for some, many people find relief from the substance they can find nowhere else.
People abuse prescription painkillers already.  Narcotics are already opium based, and retain much more of their psychoactive power than marijuana does with its THC reduced or removed, and opiates are much more dangerous drugs than marijuana.  Even cocaine is legal for some medicinal purposes.  The potential for abuse of marijuana is further reduced by the ability to eliminate THC, so even states skeptical of people’s motivations for seeking medicinal marijuana, or skeptical of the legalization of recreational marijuana, can simply regulate the amount of THC allowed in marijuana-based medications.
Benswann.com’s Joshua Cook asked Koozer how the treatment has helped his daughter so far.
“The frequency of spasms has been reduced, but the overall intensity has decreased,” Koozer said.
“Here is a medication that is plant derived. It doesn’t show any side effects. We are having extremely good success. We are looking at the original 35 kids who were on it. The research results show that 80 percent of those kids showed a 50 percent reduction without harmful side effects,” Koozer said.
Koozer said, “those who are skeptical wonder why I don’t resort to a pharmaceutical option. What people don’t think about is that every epileptic drug on the market has severe side effects: sleeplessness, increased seizures, liver and kidney failure, unexplained death, and vision loss is one of the major ones.”
Koozer believes that the natural properties derived from cannabis have a lot to offer compared to the harmful side effects of other pharmaceutical drugs.
Though people may be skeptical of legalizing marijuana for recreational use, there should be no question about legalizing it for medicinal purposes.  It doesn’t make sense that the least stigmatized drug for recreational use should be the most stigmatized for medical purposes.  This is a substance which has the power to save the lives of children, cancer patients, fibromyalgia sufferers and more.  Furthermore, the psychoactive component can be removed using a variety of methods, not only reducing those effects in young children and other users, but also reducing the motivation for abuse of the system or the drug.

Connecting the Dots: GMOs and Vaccines




Humans suffer from hubris – we think we know better than nature, can fix it, manipulate it, and master it. There are (at least) two major transgressions that follow similar patterns, raise important red flags, and most certainly do not pass the sniff test: GMOs (genetically modified "foods") and vaccination.  Here's what they have in common:

War with Nature
Nature has a sense to it, cultivated over billions of years of evolution. The complexity of botanical systems, the relationship to pests, soil, and the elements sustains optimal diversity and reproduction. It was only when we began to industrialize the process, hijack growth with an eye toward yield, and allow chemical companies to attempt to regulate variables of perceived adversity that we ended up in the mess that GMO crops are in today. Now we have randomly spliced animal DNA with bacterial vectors inserting into plant genomes, disrupting the natural functioning of the plant, and allowing for supersaturation with the toxic, endocrine-disrupting and gut bug slaughtering herbicide, Roundup.
Pharmaceutical companies and doctors think they can outsmart immune systems that have evolved to coexist with microbes, to be primed and educated by them. We are at war with infectious disease, and as a consequence, our fear and malice toward bacteria and viruses have lead us to compromise and alter our immune systems with pathogens entering our bodies through our muscles, accompanied by toxic additives that cripple our natural immune function and cause chronic inflammation. The notion of improving upon our human capacities, as we understand them is discussed by Sayer Ji of GreenMedInfo as "transhumanism."

We cannot outsmart nature, we are only just beginning to appreciate her infinite sophistication.

Lack of Pre-marketing Safety Study
Monsanto claims that GMOs are simultaneously equivalent to existing foods (relieving them of any real duty to demonstrate safety), and novel enough that they can be patented. Despite the Frankensteinian effects of genetic manipulation on proteins and gene expression, these foods have never been studied in a human population, let alone assessing for long-term effects. What happens as a result of this fast-track-to-market process is that slow-emerging trends of harm at the population level begin to emerge.  Differing patterns of chronic disease in Europe and America at this point may have some relation to limitations of GMO products in Europe.  There is inherent difficulty in associating cause to effect in chronic disease; however, arguing for the importance of long-term premarketing trials.

Vaccines have similarly, never been studied against an unvaccinated control group, allegedly because they are assumed to be so vital to our health that it would be unethical to withhold them even though basic epidemiology demonstrates that hygiene and nutrition have played the most significant role in elimination of infectious disease.  They have never been studied in their current schedule, nor have the additives (adjuvants) which include known body toxins, aluminum, mercury, formaldehyde, and polysorbate 80.

Signal of Harm
Despite this lack of effort and incentive to support safety data in these two arenas, both have suffered a signal of harm that should have activated the precautionary principal. Monsanto monitored GM and non-GM fed rats for 90 days, and declared that changes in liver and kidney function were not clinically significant. Seralini et al, copied this design, but extended the observation period to years. Take agander at what happened to these animals. The first tumor sprouted at the 4 month mark. Multiple animal studies have emerged mirroring this study's provocative findings. Glyphosate, the herbicide that has been sprayed in escalating quantities, is an endocrine-disruptor that has been linked to obesity, liver disease, birth defects, autism, and cancer. This is the most enlightening exploration of its toxic mechanisms. Bt-toxin in GMO corn has been found to puncture intestinal cells and circulate into fetal tissue.

Whether in the realm of neurodevelopment, death, autoimmunity, or even susceptibility to the disease intended to provide protection from, vaccines have been demonstrated to harm and several billion dollars of taxpayer money have been paid out to victims through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. Patterns of chronic illness such as atopy and autism have been demonstrated to correlate with vaccine uptake and prospective study of neurodevelopment in monkey's has demonstrated injury.

Suppression of Investigation
Seralini was silenced. His work was roundly attacked, censored from the media, and demands from industry ties for the paper to be retracted from its journal of publication. Several months after Seralini's paper, Richard Goodman, a former Monsanto employee was fast-tracked to the position of Associate Editor for Biotechnology. With Monsanto now at the helm of influential medical journals, the prospects for publication of independent research are diminishing.

The now infamous Andrew Wakefield, who published a paper on the presence of vaccine-strain measles in the guts of autistic children was stripped of his license and maligned for fraud in a witch-hunt intended to suppress any further investigation into this connection. Fortunately, at least 28 independent studies from around the world have confirmed his findings.

Protection of Corporate Profits
The "Monsanto Protection Act" was designed to provide legal immunity to GM technology so that citizens could never litigate on the grounds of harm secondary to GM food exposure. In this way, corporations would be protected above farmers and citizens.
The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program was established in 1986 to assume liability from corporations so that any incentive to police the safety of their product was roundly eliminated and civilians could only engage in a non-jury-mediated "trial" of red-tape and rejection as a means of seeking justice for injury.

Revolving Door Conflicts of Interest
This is where the rubber meets the road on these issues, and, truly the source of all corruption. When those regulating a system in need of checks and balances are the same people who have profited or are profiting from its protection and success, we have a critical breakdown in protection of the interests of consumers and patience. The revolving door of Monsanto and government ranges from Michael Taylor, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Foods and former Monsanto Vice President of Public Policy to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, former Monsanto attorney. The list of interchangeable figures between the CDC, pharmaceutical industry and Vaccine Advisory Committee features more conflicts than exceptions. Notably, in January 2010, Julie Gerberding, former director of the CDC, became the President of Merck's vaccine unit. In January 2011, Elias Zerhouni, former director of the NIH became President of Sanofi-Aventis' research labs. These relationships are known to be kindled far in advance of the job acceptance. The most outspoken mouthpiece of today's vaccine schedule is Paul Offit MD, Merck employee and Rotavirus vaccine patent holder.  This paper details the many layers of profit-motivation that cloud regulators' judgment.  Here's a little video if you'd rather not read.

It is an impossible expectation that objectivity in research support or information dissemination could be exercised under these circumstances. These conflicts of interest undermine any and all safety claims, and leave those engaging with these technologies to look to research that has not been funded by corporate agendas to help navigate true concerns about risk. These are multibillion-dollar corporate giants with dollars to spare when it comes to influencing legislators and regulators.

These arenas and their implicit overlap as discussed here, are slated to unite in a number of in-development GMO-containing vaccines. We are already part of a vast, uncontrolled experiment, and this may add a layer of complexity that will be the ultimate straw that broke the camel's back. If you're anything like me, you want out of this deal you never signed up for. There is a way out. Make informed choices, trust your instincts, vote with your wallet.

Growing up, particularly in our teens, we are constantly told that eating fruits and vegetables will keep our skin clear. But there is more to it than just eating them and some of them can be used as a great natural alternative to medicine.

  3. Papaya is another rich antioxidant. it can also be used to remove dead skin cells when applied to the skin topically.

  5. Coconut water has anti-fungal properties, high in vitamin c and also in vitamin b which can aid in the repair of skin tissue. It can be taken as a drink or simply washing your face or body in it will help to improve your skin.
  6. Mint, in particular peppermint is a great way to treat skin infections and is soothing relief for insect bites and stings.. It can also be used to help eradicate scabies mites but there is very little research to show the effectiveness of this. 
  7. Neem goes way beyond cleaning blocked pores and eliminating pimples. It has anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also an analgesic, which means it can be used as a pain killer when used topically (applied to the skin). This is a little powerhouse and the essential oil and leaves are perfect for healing skin problems.
Always remember when trying any of these, do a skin test first. As with anything, sometimes sensitivity can occur.

Acne: caused by bad diet, lots of processed foods – reduce amount of processed foods consumed and follow a whole foods, high raw lifestyle to help detox and regenerate the body. Tea tree oil helps combat acne since it is a strong antibacterial. Apply tea tree oil directly to your blemish in a little bit of carrier oil like jojoba oil.

Allergies (i.e., Hay Fever): make teas which help reduce allergen symptoms. Drink teas like nettle, and echinacea.

Alzheimer’s Disease: rosemary and high-antioxidant foods like berries to help strengthen neuronal connections in the brain.

Anti-inflammatory (arthritis, gout, inflammatory diseases): ginger, cayenne, and turmeric; these three foods combat the inflammatory response in the body. I like to juice these, about 4-5 inches per juice.

Anxiety: calm your nerves with chamomile and lavender. Practice breathing techniques, meditation & yoga.

Asthma: cayenne or lobelia. Decrease protein intake to 10% of your daily calories, and eliminate all milk and milk products. Eat organically grown fruits and vegetables and eat ginger and turmeric daily for anti-inflammatory relief.

Bad Breath: deodorizing herbs like parsley, dill, fennel and mint. Juice them, put them in smoothies, or salads.

Bloating: drink peppermint tea, or chew on some fennel seeds. Often caused by heavily processed foods and bad food combining (aka. eating sweet and acid fruits together).

Blood Pressure (high): basil and celery. Eliminate sodium from diet.

Blood Tonic: beets! They help re-build our blood cells and prevent anemia.

Boils: put a little bit of goldenseal or echinacea drops onto your boils to help them heal.

Broken Bones: eat lots of calcium rich plant foods like broccoli, leafy greens, bok choy and chia seeds. Get ample vitamin D from the sun (go sit out in the sun – use some coconut oil for a natural SPF).

Bronchitis: oregano oil, contains carvacrol which is a phenol anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory that eases chest congestion and eradicates disease. Take 5-10 drops of pure oregano oil in a bit of water twice per day until symptoms subside.

Bruises: arnica gel or aloe vera. Apply a cold press to your bruise and then apply these remedies after 10-15 minutes of cold pressing. Consume pineapple too! It contains bromelain which is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Chills: ginger – helps stimulate digestive fires.

High Cholesterol: reduce animal products, and consume a high raw plant based diet. Eat lots of green foods like broccoli sprouts, chlorella, spirulina, sea vegetables, leafy greens and dark green vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, etc.)

Poor Circulation: cayenne pepper & ginger helps dilate blood vessels, which helps improve circulation.

Cold Hands: See poor circulation

Cold Sores: take L-lysine supplement, or use tea tree oil and garlic to kill the virus. Hold garlic on the cold sore, or use tea tree oil as a topical supplement.

Colds: eat lots of lemon, and drink plenty echinacea tea. Eat 1-2 cloves of garlic twice daily and drink 3-4 L water. Get lots of rest.

Poor Concentration: maca root and ginseng help improve concentration, as well as high-antioxidant foods like organic berries.

Congestion: cayenne pepper and ginger help open up sinus cavities.

Coughs: help soothe your throat with lemon and raw honey.

Cramps: rub some peppermint oil on your abdomen (dilute with carrier oil like jojoba), and my favourite, use a hot water bottle. Ginger tea also helps stop cramps and pain.

Diarrhea: eat more foods high in fiber like fruit and vegetables, and make sure to eat them raw to ensure you get live enzymes and pre-biotics to help ensure healthy gut flora.

Diuretic: celery and watermelon act as great diuretics.

Drug Addiction: plant medicines like ayahuasca have helped numerous individuals get over their drug addictions – do your research, use google. You will likely need to travel to peru if you want to see a true shamanic master healer.

Dry Skin: often a cause of a dehydrated diet. Eat hydrating foods like fruit and vegetables, and get rid of processed foods. In the mean time, rub coconut oil or jojoba oil on your skin.

Ear Infection: Make a warm mixture of salt water (1 tsp. salt to 1 cup water) and put in your ear 4 times a day until healed.

Exhaustion: sleep! Get to bed regularly and get rid of stimulating foods which disrupt our sleep patterns (caffeine for instance).

Heartburn: Drink 1-4 oz. aloe vera juice.

Itchy Skin: use soothing essential oils like peppermint and lavender.

Jaundice: cleanse your liver and kidneys with dandelion leaves, and dandelion root.

Kidney & Liver Problems: cleanse with dandelion, beet root and herbs (parsley, cilantro, watercress, fennel, arugula)

Menstrual Problems: Chaste berry, and sweet potatoes help regulate hormones.

Nausea (morning sickness, motion sickness): include plenty of ginger in your diet! 4-5 inches in a healing green juice will leave you feeling amazing.

Nosebleeds: this might sound crazy but individuals with nosebleeds who have snorted cayenne pepper have found that this cauterized the blood vessels in their nose, stopping the bleed and permanently stopping future nosebleeds! It hurts and stings during the actual snorting but if you want a quick and easy way out, this is the way to do it. Otherwise, use a cold compress on your nose to help tighten blood vessels and slow blood flow.

Osteoporosis: get rid of dairy and animal products which contain acidic protein that is neutralized in the body by alkaline minerals like calcium which is leached from the bones. Eat calcium rich plant foods like broccoli, chia seeds, kale, bok choy and leafy greens.

Overactive Thyroid: get rid of gluten – it increases the autoimmune attack on your thyroid. Eat foods rich in antioxidant molecule Glutathione which boosts your body’s ability to modulate and regulate the immune system, dampen autoimmune flare-ups, and protect and heal thyroid tissue. 12 Natural and Healthy Snacks for the Kids This Summer

Summer is the time of year when most families find themselves constantly on-the-go and in a never-ending flurry of activities. Offering a variety of healthy snacks can be daunting even for the most healthy conscious parent and because of this is often placed on the back burner.  Idealy children should snack every 3-4 hours to keep insulin levels normal and to provide the extra vitamins and nutrients their growing body needs.  Below are some easy and healthy snack ideas that can help you plan delicious and nutritious snack foods for your children and their friends!  But…shhhh!…don’t mention the “healthy” part.


1. Provide organic fruits such as grapes, orange slices, cherries and strawberries washed, sliced and ready-to-eat in a cool-looking bowl in the fridge. Kids will love the convenience and will be refreshed by cold fruit on those hot summer afternoons.  If you are traveling, place ice packs in a cooler and put the sliced fruits in baggies.

2. Make popsicles out of freshly juiced fruits or organic, no sugar added fruit juice. Add some banana or strawberry slices to the mixture. Peach, Mango and Strawberry-Orange popsicles will earn you the parent-of-the-year award!

3. Put together (in advance) pre-portioned bags of snacks such as healthy granola (no sugar!), snack bars, etc. so that they are ready to grab for a healthy snack on-the-go.

4. Keep a bowl of pre-cut veggies such as carrots, celery, bell peppers, squash, etc. in the fridge. Make up several fresh healthy dips in which to dip the veggies.

5. Make your own “healthy” trail mix and pre-portion it into snack bags.

6. Peel and halve bananas, put wooden sticks into the end and freeze. Banana Pops are delicioius and provide potassium.

7. Using a Vita Mix or one of the high speed blenders one can make a very healthy ice-cream using frozen fruit, stevia/xylitol/honey, organic cream/milk/almond milk/hempseed milk and vanilla.

8. Keep a jug of our healthy Summer Thirst Quenchers in the fridge.

9. Apple Sandwiches with Granola and Nut Butter (Almond butter is best!) Your children will LOVE making these fun and tasty treats.

10.  Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies make a great cookie-break snack- gluten free and delicious!

11.  On especially hot afternoons, treat your children to a Fresh Strawberry Milkshake made with almond milk!

12.  Baked Sweet Potato Chips.  Easy to make and your children will love them.  Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Thinly slice sweet potatoes no more than 1/8″ thick.  Place on a baking sheet and brush lightly with unrefined coconut oil. Bake for about 15 minutes or until chips are lightly brown.  Add some Himalayan Crystal Salt.  Serve with homemade salsa or dip.
