Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks On Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food

Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out on the Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food:

By Dr. Mercola
Who better to speak the truth about the risks posed by genetically modified (GM) foods than Thierry Vrain, a former research scientist for Agriculture Canada? It was Vrain’s job to address public groups and reassure them that GM crops and food were safe, a task he did with considerable knowledge and passion.
Thanks for making this picture gmo-awareness.com

But Vrain, who once touted GM crops as a technological advancement indicative of sound science and progress, has since started to acknowledge the steady flow of research coming from prestigious labs and published in high-impact journals - research showing that there is significant reason for concern about GM crops – and he has now changed his position.

Former Pro-GMO Scientist Cites GM Food Safety Concerns

Vrain cites the concerning fact that it is studies done by Monsanto and other biotech companies that claim GM crops have no impact on the environment and are safe to eat. But federal departments in charge of food safety in the US and Canada have not conducted tests to affirm this alleged “safety.”
Vrain writes:1
There are no long-term feeding studies performed in these countries [US and Canada] to demonstrate the claims that engineered corn and soya are safe. All we have are scientific studies out of Europe and Russia, showing that rats fed engineered food die prematurely.
These studies show that proteins produced by engineered plants are different than what they should be. Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing that engineered corn and soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins.
… I refute the claims of the biotechnology companies that their engineered crops yield more, that they require less pesticide applications, that they have no impact on the environment and of course that they are safe to eat.”

“The Whole Paradigm of Genetic Engineering Technology is Based on a Misunderstanding”

This misunderstanding is the “one gene, one protein” hypothesis from 70 years ago, which stated that each gene codes for a single protein. However, the Human Genome project completed in 2002 failed dramatically to identify one gene for every one protein in the human body, forcing researchers to look to epigenetic factors -- namely, "factors beyond the control of the gene" – to explain how organisms are formed, and how they work.
According to Vrain:
“Genetic engineering is 40 years old. It is based on the naive understanding of the genome based on the One Gene – one protein hypothesis of 70 years ago, that each gene codes for a single protein. The Human Genome project completed in 2002 showed that this hypothesis is wrong.
The whole paradigm of the genetic engineering technology is based on a misunderstanding. Every scientist now learns that any gene can give more than one protein and that inserting a gene anywhere in a plant eventually creates rogue proteins. Some of these proteins are obviously allergenic or toxic.”
In other words, genetic engineering is based on an extremely oversimplified model that suggests that by taking out or adding one or several genes, you can create a particular effect or result. But this premise, which GMO expert Dr. Philip Bereano calls “the Lego model,” is not correct. You cannot simply take out a yellow piece and put in a green piece and call the structure identical because there are complex interactions that are still going to take place and be altered, even if the initial structure still stands.

Serious Problems May Arise From Horizontal Gene Transfer

GE plants and animals are created using horizontal gene transfer (also called horizontal inheritance), as contrasted with vertical gene transfer, which is the mechanism in natural reproduction. Vertical gene transfer, or vertical inheritance, is the transmission of genes from the parent generation to offspring via sexual or asexual reproduction, i.e., breeding a male and female from one species.
By contrast, horizontal gene transfer involves injecting a gene from one species into a completely different species, which yields unexpected and often unpredictable results. Proponents of GM crops assume they can apply the principles of vertical inheritance to horizontal inheritance, but according to Dr. David Suzuki, an award-winning geneticist, this assumption is flawed in just about every possible way and is “just lousy science.”
Genes don’t function in a vacuum — they act in the context of the entire genome. Whole sets of genes are turned on and off in order to arrive at a particular organism, and the entire orchestration is an activated genome. It’s a dangerous mistake to assume a gene’s traits are expressed properly, regardless of where they’re inserted. The safety of GM food is based only on a hypothesis, and this hypothesis is already being proven wrong.

Leading Scientists Disprove GMO Safety

Vrain cites the compelling report "GMO Myths and Truths"2 as just one of many scientific examples disputing the claims of the biotech industry that GM crops yield better and more nutritious food, save on the use of pesticides, have no environmental impact whatsoever and are perfectly safe to eat. The authors took a science-based approach to evaluating the available research, arriving at the conclusion that most of the scientific evidence regarding safety and increased yield potential do not at all support the claims. In fact, the evidence demonstrates the claims for genetically engineered foods are not just wildly overblown – they simply aren't true.
The authors of this critical report include Michael Antoniou, PhD, who heads the Gene Expression and Therapy Group at King's College at London School of Medicine in the UK. He's a 28-year veteran of genetic engineering technology who has himself invented a number of gene expression biotechnologies; and John Fagan, PhD, a leading authority on food sustainability, biosafety, and GE testing. If you want to get a comprehensive understanding of genetically engineered foods, I strongly recommend reading this report.
Not only are GM foods less nutritious than non-GM foods, they pose distinct health risks, are inadequately regulated, harm the environment and farmers, and are a poor solution to world hunger. Worse still, these questionable GM crops are now polluting non-GM crops, leading to contamination that cannot ever be “recalled” the way you can take a bad drug off the market … once traditional foods are contaminated with GM genes, there is no going back! Vrain expanded:3
Genetic pollution is so prevalent in North and South America where GM crops are grown that the fields of conventional and organic grower are regularly contaminated with engineered pollen and losing certification. The canola and flax export market from Canada to Europe (a few hundreds of millions of dollars) were recently lost because of genetic pollution.”

American Academy of Environmental Medicine Called for Moratorium on GM Foods FOUR Years Ago

In 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine called for a moratorium on GM foods, and said that long-term independent studies must be conducted, stating:
“Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food, including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. …There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation…"
Despite this sound warning, GM foods continue to be added to the US food supply with no warning to the Americans buying and eating this food. Genetic manipulation of crops, and more recently food animals, is a dangerous game that has repeatedly revealed that assumptions about how genetic alterations work and the effects they have on animals and humans who consume such foods are deeply flawed and incomplete. Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant claims genetically engineered crops are “the most-tested food product that the world has ever seen.” What he doesn’t tell you is that:
  1. Industry-funded research predictably affects the outcome of the trial. This has been verified by dozens of scientific reviews comparing funding with the findings of the study. When industry funds the research, it’s virtually guaranteed to be positive. Therefore, independent studies must be done to replicate and thus verify results.
  2. The longest industry-funded animal feeding study was 90 days, which recent research has confirmed is FAR too short. In the world’s first independently funded lifetime feeding study, massive health problems set in during and after the 13th month, including organ damage and cancer.
  3. Companies like Monsanto and Syngenta rarely if ever allow independent researchers access to their patented seeds, citing the legal protection these seeds have under patent laws. Hence independent research is extremely difficult to conduct.
  4. There is no safety monitoring. Meaning, once the GM item in question has been approved, not a single country on earth is actively monitoring and tracking reports of potential health effects.

It Might Take More Than One Bite to Kill You …

One argument I hear repeatedly is that nobody has been sick or died after a meal (or a trillion meals since 1996) of GM food,” Vrain said. “Nobody gets ill from smoking a pack of cigarettes either. But it sure adds up, and we did not know that in the 1950s before we started our wave of epidemics of cancer. Except this time it is not about a bit of smoke, it’s the whole food system that is of concern.  The corporate interest must be subordinated to the public interest, and the policy of substantial equivalence must be scrapped as it is clearly untrue.”
Remember, Vrain used to give talks about the benefits of GM foods, but he simply couldn’t ignore the research any longer … and why, then, should you?  All in all, if GM foods have something wrong with them that potentially could cause widespread illness or environmental devastation, Monsanto would rather NOT have you find out about it. Not through independent research, nor through a simple little label that would allow you to opt out of the experiment, should you choose not to take them on their word. As Vrain continued:
“The Bt corn and soya plants that are now everywhere in our environment are registered as insecticides. But are these insecticidal plants regulated and have their proteins been tested for safety? Not by the federal departments in charge of food safety, not in Canada and not in the U.S.
… We should all take these studies seriously and demand that government agencies replicate them rather than rely on studies paid for by the biotech companies … Individuals should be encouraged to make their decisions on food safety based on scientific evidence and personal choice, not on emotion or the personal opinions of others.”
At present, the only way to avoid GM foods is to ditch processed foods from your grocery list, and revert back to whole foods grown according to organic standards.

Keep Fighting for Labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods

While California Prop. 37 failed to pass last November, by a very narrow margin, the fight for GMO labeling is far from over. The field-of-play has now moved to the state of Washington, where the people's initiative 522, "The People's Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act," will require food sold in retail outlets to be labeled if it contains genetically engineered ingredients. As stated on LabelitWA.org:
"Calorie and nutritional information were not always required on food labels. But since 1990 it has been required and most consumers use this information every day. Country-of-origin labeling wasn't required until 2002. The trans fat content of foods didn't have to be labeled until 2006. Now, all of these labeling requirements are accepted as important for consumers. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also says we must know with labeling if our orange juice is from fresh oranges or frozen concentrate.
Doesn't it make sense that genetically engineered foods containing experimental viral, bacterial, insect, plant or animal genes should be labeled, too? Genetically engineered foods do not have to be tested for safety before entering the market. No long-term human feeding studies have been done. The research we have is raising serious questions about the impact to human health and the environment.
I-522 provides the transparency people deserve. I-522 will not raise costs to consumers or food producers. It simply would add more information to food labels, which manufacturers change routinely anyway, all the time. I-522 does not impose any significant cost on our state. It does not require the state to conduct label surveillance, or to initiate or pursue enforcement. The state may choose to do so, as a policy choice, but I-522 was written to avoid raising costs to the state or consumers."
Remember, as with CA Prop. 37, they need support of people like YOU to succeed. Prop. 37 failed with a very narrow margin simply because we didn't have the funds to counter the massive ad campaigns created by the No on 37 camp, led by Monsanto and other major food companies. Let's not allow Monsanto and its allies to confuse and mislead the people of Washington and Vermont as they did in California. So please, I urge you to get involved and help in any way you can, regardless of what state you live in.

The Monsanto-Free Seed Company List

Monsanto Free Seed

Some background that’s important to understand when using this list-

The Safe Seed Pledge

“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms poses great biological risks, as well as economic, political and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.”

History of the Safe Seed Pledge

The Safe Seed Pledge was created in 1999 when High Mowing Organic Seeds guided a coalition of 9 other seed companies in drafting a statement about the signers’ stance on genetic engineering. Over 70 companies have signed the pledge, ranging from large seed companies to family-owned businesses such as ours.
In signing the Safe Seed Pledge we affirm our commitment to non-GMO (genetically modified organism) seed.  We feel that the regulatory framework for the introduction of genetically modified crop varieties is flawed, and that GMO seeds themselves present a threat to plants’ genetic diversity through their ability to pollinate non-GMO plants.

But then Monsanto comes along….

It’s not terribly easy to avoid them, which is why we’ve compiled the list below
In 2005, Monsanto purchased Semenis which was (and is) the world’s largest seed company and now they own thousands of conventional seed companies in addition to their GMO seed business.  Monsanto now owns 40% of the conventional seed market in the US and 20% of the worldwide market, including organics and heirlooms.  It’s not terribly easy to avoid them, which is why we’ve compiled the list below list with the help of readers and some experts from the field, both to help you navigate through things as well as encouragement for companies to take part in the boycott so that they may also qualify to have their names included.

Cancer Killing Dandelion Tea Gets Research Grant

Researchers in Windsor, Ontario, have received an additional $157,000 grant for a total of $217,000 to study how effective dandelion root extract is in fighting cancer.

Siyaram Pandey, a biochemist at the University of Windsor, has been studying the anti-cancer potential of dandelion root extract for almost two years. His team’s first phase of research showed that dandelion root extract forced a very aggressive and drug-resistant type of blood cancer cell, known as chronic monocytic myeloid leukemia, to essentially commit suicide. Researchers then discovered that repeated treatment with low dose dandelion root extract was effective in killing most of the cancerous cells. Those initial findings landed the research team a $60,000 grant from Seeds4Hope, which provides money for local cancer research. Pandey then applied for continued funding from the Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation. That $157,000 came through earlier this week bringing the total to $217,000. Researcher was skeptical at first Pandey admits he was skeptical when he was first approached by local oncologist, Dr. Caroline Hamm, who was curious about cancer patients who had been drinking dandelion tea and seemed to be getting better. “To be honest I was very pessimistic,” Pandey said in a statement. “She said it could be coincidental but it couldn’t hurt to see if there is anything.” Hamm was convinced that the weed contains an active ingredient, but warned earlier this year that "it can harm as well as benefit." She told CBC News in February that taking dandelion extract tea could interfere with regular chemotherapy, and she urged patients not to mix the natural remedy with other cancer drugs without speaking to a doctor first. Pandey conducted a literature review and could only find one journal article suggesting dandelions may have cancer-killing properties. But he and his team of graduate students collected a bunch of the weeds anyway, ground them up with a mixture of water in a food processor and developed a simple formula they could experiment with. They tested the formula on several lines of commercially available leukemia cells and much to their surprise, found that the formula caused those cells to kill themselves, a process called apoptosis. “It was startling, but it was not that startling until we saw that it was non-toxic to the normal cells,” he said. John DiCarlo, 72, says dandelion tea saved his life, after other medical treatments for his leukemia failed. (CBC News) John DiCarlo, 72, was admitted to hospital three years ago with leukemia. Even after aggressive treatment, he was sent home to put his affairs in order with his wife and four children. The cancer clinic suggested he try the tea. Four months later, he returned to the clinic in remission. He has been cancer free for three years. He said his doctor credits the dandelions. "He said, 'You are doing pretty good, you aren't a sick man anymore'," DiCarlo told CBC News in February.

Natural Cures For PMS

Many women the world over suffer from PMS. Symptoms can vary, the most common being, headaches, bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, hot flashes, lower back and abdominal pain.
Fortunately, there are ways to combat the bothersome monthly demon without the use of pain killers. Foods and herbal supplements can all be beneficial. Understanding which foods our bodies need in the time leading up to and during a menstrual cycle can really make a big difference. Making simple changes to your food diet at least a couple of weeks in advance can actually help. It wont necessarily eliminate the problems completely, but studies have shown that they can certainly have a massive, positive impact.

Beat PMS with these superfoods:

  1. Iron rich foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, beans, egg yolks and for those who are not vegetarian, red meat, shellfish and poultry. Add some vitamin C rich foods or supplements to maximize the absorption of iron into the body. This will help account for the tiredness due to blood loss during a menstrual cycle.
  2. Bananas are a fantastic way to ward off  PMS. They are a fantastic source of potassium, zinc, fiber, calcium,  folic acid, B6, and iron. It's because they are packed full of goodness that they can replenish depleted nutrient levels caused by menstruation.
  3. Fat, the healthier type can actually help stop unwanted food cravings. Eating foods such as walnuts, oily fish or adding healthy oils such as coconut and olive in your meals can be of great benefit.
  4. Calcium and Vitamin D can reduce symptoms of pain, bloating, cramps and food cravings. Excellent sources of calcium (other than dairy products) are brazil nuts, collard greens, molasses, kelp, sesame seeds and fish.
  5. B Vitamins are a great way to relieve PMS symptoms. B6 and B12, folate, thiamin and niacin. Top foods containing these are beans, dark leafy vegetables, milk, red meat and oranges.

Herbal Supplements for PMS:

  1. Vitex or Chaste Tree, is probably the most common used herbal supplement for PMS.  It helps with heavy bleeding, irregular menstrual cycles and general reproductive health.
  2. Cramp Bark, is well known for easing (as the name suggests) menstrual cramps.
  3. Raspberry Leaf Tea, is fantastic for strengthening the uterus and helping symptoms of heavy bleeding and pain.
  4. Black Cohosh balances hormones due to its natural estrogen properties.
  5. Ginger helps relieve pain, gas and bloating.

Monsanto Stocks Haven Fallen 10%

Our friendly corporate giant has lost 10% of its stock value over the last couple days. We believe it has something to do with the  recent news and massive amounts of information proving that GMOs and GE food do not grow larger volumes or make the farmers more money.
They are also NOT safe. Entire countries are banning and refusing orders of Monsanto and GMO/GE seeds and food. It's almost like the world is suddenly waking up and demanding their freedoms to have natural food. Here is a picture of

Monsanto's stock price fell last week:

And after that... When the markets closed....

If it keeps going down tomorrow we will update this article. Maybe they are just going through hard times. Maybe they took on a debt they can't pay back? Who knows...

Monsanto Loses In Europe!

BREAKING NEWS: Monsanto will halt production of genetically modified corn in all of Europe,

except Spain, Portugal and the Czech Republic. The agrichemical multinational states that it will not spend any more money on trials, development, marketing, court cases or anything else to get GM corn accepted in Europe. Read: http://www.ir-d.dk/gmo-lose-europe-victory-for-environmental-organisations

Update* The world's largest producer of seeds, Monsanto, has apparently given up on attempts to spread its genetically modified plant varieties in Europe. A German media report said the firm would end all lobbying for approval. The German newspaper "taz" reported Friday that US agriculture behemoth Monsanto had dropped any plans to have farmers grow its genetically modified (GM) plant varieties in Europe. Monsanto Europe spokesman Brandon Mitchener was quoted as saying the company would no longer engage in any lobbying fur such plants on the continent, adding that at the moment the firm was unwilling to apply for approval of any GM plants. source http://www.dw.de

Indian Spice May Reduce Alzheimer's Symptoms by 30%

Indian Spice May Reduce Alzheimer's Symptoms by 30%

Indian food. We love it, crave it, seek out the best Indian restaurants in the ‘hood' but did you realize that you might actually be decreasing your chances of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia when you consume it? There is a compound found in turmeric called cucumin that is widely being studied for its powerful antioxidant properties. Turmeric has been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries and is also used in other South Asian cuisines in countries like Nepal and Thailand.

According to Oregon State University Linus Paul Institute, “Curcumin/Turmeric is a spice derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae).” If we look at other substances that are known to be powerful antioxidants and that have a just-as-powerful colored appearance, like blueberries, tomatoes (lycopene), carrots (beta-carotene), and pomegranates, we see that the trend continues when looking at curcumin. The properties that give these antioxidants their beautiful colors are the same properties that make them beneficial to ingest, to our bodies, boasting the highest of antioxidant properties. Turmeric, known for it’s amazing, bright yellowish-orange color not only is used to spice food, it’s used to dye fabrics as well. Seems like a wonder spice, no? Interestingly enough, not only does it taste good and provide amazing color, it can help with memory problems for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and those with HIV-induced dementia – and even other maladies such as cancer and cystic fibrosis although studies are very preliminary at this point in all areas.

Alzheimer’s patients have beta amyloid plaque that builds-up in the brain. Early studies show that curcumin helps prevent the build-up of that plaque and is actually helping to allow that plaque to break up and out of the brain. The bright yellow compound, when administered ground up into a capsule or through a tincture, over time, allows the beta amyloid plaque to help be removed and patients show a decreased progression in the disease. What does this mean? TIME. And reduction of symptoms. Not only can some of the patients show an improvement in their dementia symptoms, they will also show a reduction on how quickly the disease spreads. Symptom generations slow speed depending on how well the patient responds to treatment. Patients who had an early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s showed significant slowed timetable regarding onset of symptoms. Additionally, it is believed that those who use curcumin as a preventative treatment, those who are at risk for developing the disease, may have a reduced risk of developing it later in life. Those who have HIV and are undergoing supplemental care with curcumin have showed that the onset of HIV-induced dementia is greatly reduced. Blood flow to the brain is greatly improved when the patient is treated with Curcumin – in this case where the “patient” is a lab rat. Studies conducted on the lab rats saw a significant difference between the control group and those where were given the treatment when memory loss was induced. This is very promising for future human treatments.

Preliminary studies on human patients are just as promising. Seniors Health via Suite101.com reported on a “September 2009 European Neuropsychopharmacologyarticle by Tauheed Ishrat et al entitled “Amelioration of cognitive deficits and neurodegeneration by curcumin in rat model of sporadic dementia of Alzheimer’s type (SDAT),” rats were given streptozotocin, which created significant memory problems, or cognitive deficits. The subjects that received supplemental curcumin experienced less memory loss with apparent oxidative potential.” The part that is really desirable is that this is an affordable treatment. So many of the medications for these types of illnesses are so very expensive and hard to obtain in some cases, and if a patient is on experimental therapies the pharmacy bills skyrocket. When considering a treatment that is solely an herb we can reach the summation that the costs are going to be a fraction. But before you reach for the bowl and pestle make sure you check with your doctor. The high dose of curcumin that is required to treat memory issues may cause side effects such as indigestion, gall bladder and liver problems and can even interact with certain medications.

Chicken Nuggets May Contain Fluoride

Natural Cures Not Medicine!

Do your Chicken Nuggets Contain Fluoride?

Maybe you’re not concerned about the little bit of fluoride you might ingest from brushing your pearly whites each day. You’re probably more concerned about the fluoride coming out of your tap, right? But, these aren’t the only sources of fluoride that you may be exposed to each day. In fact, you could be serving up a dose of fluoride for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The good news is that you can easily navigate the sea of processed products and reduce your risk of health effects from long-term exposure.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in air and water – not just your fluoridated tap water, but in all water to some degree. If you live in a large city in the U.S., chances are good that your tap water has had fluoride added to it since 43 of the 50 largest cities engage in community water fluoridation. This makes you are a member of the club representing 62% of the population, or roughly 144 million people that have fluoridated tap water. (1) However, some of the highest concentrations of fluoride in drinking water don’t always come from the public water supply but from deep wells. And here’s another unpleasant surprise: fluoride has also found its way into many ordinary foods and beverages.

One Lump or Two?

A national survey of oral health in the U.S. conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that dental fluorosis occurs in 32% of American children between the ages of 6 and 19, an increase of 9% from two decades ago. The survey also revealed that African American children experienced a greater rate of incidence than all other ethic groups, although the reason is not clear. (2) What is evident is that the increased exposure to fluoride is not related to accidentally swallowing toothpaste.

According to the Medical College of Georgia, fluoride may be your cup of tea – literally. The tea plant, which is brewed into the world’s most consumed beverage, absorbs fluoride from the soil to the tune of 3 to 4 parts per million (ppm). A few cups a day doesn’t present a significant risk, but some studies indicate that people who drink large amounts of black tea are at higher risk for a bone disease called skeletal fluorosis. (3) Fluoride is also found in prepared iced tea mixes, but in smaller amounts, generally between 1 and 4 ppm.

Process This

Many processed foods and beverages contain fluoride for one simple reason: they’re processed with fluoridated water from the public supply. This includes soft drinks, fruit juices, infant formula, cereal, canned soup, dried fruits, wine and beer. Scientists at Oregon State University have found that chicken nuggets and other processed chicken products that undergo mechanical deboning significantly contribute to fluoride overload, with nuggets and sticks containing an average of 3.6 ppm and pureed chicken meals for infants up to 5.6 ppm. (4)

Hard Facts to Swallow

Fluoride is not an essential nutrient, which means your body doesn’t need it to function and there’s no such thing as fluoride deficiency. This element is, however, more toxic than lead and only slightly less toxic than arsenic. The current argument in the scientific community doesn’t appear to be related to toxicity of fluoride in general but its degree of chronic toxicity, meaning the long-term effects of ingesting sustained levels of fluoride over time. Ironically, the Institute of Medicine maintains that the “safe” daily intake of fluoride over the course of a lifetime is 10 milligrams per day – the same amount the agency admits can cause skeletal fluorosis within 10 to 20 years. (5) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledges the toxicity of fluoride because of its use in pesticides and rodenticides, yet it’s in your child’s toothpaste. If you didn’t immediately run to check for yourself just now, we’ll fill you in: the FDA requires fluoride toothpaste to include a poison warning that directs consumers to the poison control center in the event more than the amount of paste needed for brushing goes down the hatch.

Numerous studies indicate that a wide variety of health risks are associated with prolonged, elevated intake of fluoride, specifically arthritis, kidney disease, cancer, thyroid disease, cardiovascular disease, glucose intolerance and infertility. (6)

Tips to Reduce Fluoride

The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) provides some great information on how to significantly reduce the amount of fluoride in your life (See References). But first, be assured that the fluoride that naturally occurs in whole foods, including dairy, grains, meat, fruit and vegetables, is very low and not likely to cause health problems. The exception to this is tea and seafood, as well as water from deep wells. That said, consider drinking green and white teas, which come from the same plant but are made using young leaves with lower fluoride levels and undergo minimum processing. Enjoy seafood, but in moderation. And if you have well water, have it analyzed and/or install water filters either at the well house or the tap. Installing tap filters or a water filtration system for the entire house is also a good idea if you have municipal water that is treated with fluoride.

At the store, keep in mind that the more processed the food or drink is the more fluoride it likely contains. Choose 100% fruit juice over fruit “drinks” and beverages made from concentrate. Whenever possible, buy organic foods and beverages since they are free of pesticides that contain fluoride (not to mention other toxic chemicals). Of particular importance is to opt for organic nuts, beans, dried beans, dried fruit (including raisins), grapes and wine. When it comes to convenience, buy a roasted organic chicken to help you prepare busy weeknight meals instead of deli sliced chicken breast or frozen nuggets. At home, try to prepare foods using filtered water as much as possible.

Will A GMO Ban Lead To Cannabis Raids?

- by Andrew Walden
http://www.hawaiifreepress.com/ArticlesMain/tabid/56/ID/9027/US-Patent-Pending-for-Genetically-Modified-Marijuana.aspx

Medical marijuana advocates would do well to question anti-genetic protests. These initiatives are a back-door way of re-prohibiting medical marijuana under the guise of banning GM plants.
Ironically, just as marijuana is approaching legalization, anti-GM initiatives give a weapon to drug enforcement agents who could use GM bans to justify raids against marijuana cultivators--even small growers within the “medical marijuana” limits. What protesters have missed is that today’s potent varieties of marijuana were developed by genetic modification.  The University of Central Florida even has a pending US Patent for a cannabis sativa genetic modification technique.
In 2011, the genome of cannabis sativa was sequenced and published by British companyMedicinal Genomics.
GM marijuana is so widespread it was written up by AFP, June 24, 2011:
Greenhouses lined with genetically modified marijuana sit on a mountainside just an hour ride from Cali, Colombia, where farmers say the enhanced plants are more powerful and profitable.
One greenhouse owner said she can sell the modified marijuana for 100,000 pesos ($54) per kilo (2.2 pounds), which is nearly 10 times more than the price she can get for ordinary marijuana.
Local authorities said the arrival of genetically modified seeds, which are imported from Europe and the United States have allowed "a bigger production and better quality at the same time".
A police commander in the Cauca region where Cali is located, Carlos Rodriguez, said one of the modified varieties goes by the name, "Creepy".
Another seed modified in The Netherlands is fetching a good price in the area, said a foreign researcher, who asked to remain anonymous. That version, well-known in Europe as "La Cominera", is named for the Colombian village where it grows.
"La Cominera's" higher value is due to its increased concentration of THC, the plant's principal active ingredient, and the modified plant verges on an 18 percent concentration level, compared to a normal marijuana plant's two to seven percent, said the researcher.
An August 16, 2011 UK Guardian article was titled: “New improved cannabis, now with genetic modifications”:
“Times change and cannabis is no exception, with the arrival of genetically modified grass.  An all-natural product with a low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content is a thing of the past. ‘In just a few years we have moved from 3% or 4% THC contained in natural cannabis to concentrations closer to 10%, sometimes even 30%, with GM plants,’ Thierry explains. These substances bear no relation to what people were smoking in the 1970s.”
After being attacked by British medical marijuana activists fearful of a backlash from anti-GM campaigners, the article was edited with the following note attached:
“The first paragraph of the original article, as translated from the French, referred to "genetically modified" cannabis. The Guardian understands the cultivation of stronger forms of cannabis as described in the article would be the result of methods such as selective breeding. The reference to genetically modified cannabis in the article, as well as in our headline, has therefore been removed. A quote by Superintendent François Thierry in the third paragraph has been replaced with reported speech to convey his main point about an increase in the potency of cannabis — this is to avoid an ambiguity in the original quote that referred also to synthetic cannabis (though rendered by the Guardian as GM cannabis), which contains no THC. The sentence on how the Dutch may consider reclassifying cannabis has been amended to clarify that this relates to the strongest concentrations of cannabis.”
Unless one wants to believe that nobody at the Guardian is a competent French-English translator, the most logical conclusion is that the Guardian did not want to be unwittingly responsible for a dust-up between medical marijuana activists and anti-GM activists.  Their rather absurd retraction holds that their reporting is based not on what French officials said, but on what the Guardian staff thinks they should have said.
Maybe somebody should tell the US Patent office to ask the Guardian's permission before it gives final approval to the University of Central Florida patent application which describes:
1. A method of producing a transgenic plant with Bgl overexpression relative to a wild-type plant, said method comprising: (a) introducing into a plant cell an expression cassette that comprises a Bgl gene to thereby produce a transformed plant cell; and (b) producing a transgenic plant from the transformed plant cell, wherein the transgenic plant has increased biomass, increased height, increased trichome density or increased seed production relative to a wild type plant….
9. A transgenic plant that overexpresses Bgl1 relative to a corresponding wild-type plant, wherein said transgenic plant has increased biomassincreased height, increased trichome density or increased seed production relative to a wild type plant….
15. The transgenic plant of claim 9, wherein said transgenic plant is Cannabis sativa, Papaver somniferum or Erythorxylum coca….
The three species mentioned in line 15 are marijuana and two varieties of opium poppy.  Contrary to anti-GMO activist claims, GMO developers do not patent seeds, they patent the method for producing GMO seed lines, just as traditional plant breeders patent their hybridization techniques.  How do the University of Central Florida techniques affect THC production?  “Trichome” refers to the hairs on a plant.  In Cannabis, this is where globules of THC resin accumulate.  “Bgl overexpression” increases the plants’ resistance to parasites but also may aid in the release of THC resin from plant cells onto the trichomes.
The UK Guardian is not the only example of censorship.  The website of Allan Frankel, MD, a Santa Monica, California medical marijuana doctor who specializes in high Cannabinoid, low THC varieties, screams “There Is No GMO Cannabis!”  Judging from the rambling letter on his website, it appears he has been harassed by other medical marijuana providers using anti-GMO rhetoric to snatch away ‘patients’.  Santa Monica is populated by wealthy, idle, ‘politically correct’ people which of course means corresponding levels of anti-GMO sentiment.
The story of Santa Monica’s high Cannabinoid doctor leads us around the world to--where else--Amsterdam.
By treating cannabis seeds with the powerful, readily available, mutagen colchicine, genetically modified “polyploid” marijuana, with higher levels of marijuana’s active ingredient THC, is created. Simple genetic testing of confiscated marijuana by police laboratories can easily determine if plants are polyploid (have more than the usual two sets of chromosomes) and therefore illegal under any GM crop ban.
Unlike the heavily regulated laboratory genetic modification work of companies and universities improving legal crops, marijuana is modified in unregulated underground labs without oversight. For instance:
  • The online marijuana growers guide (section 18-7) explains: “Polyploid Cannabis plants were produced by treatment with the alkaloid colchicine. Colchicine interferes with normal mitosis, the process in which cells are replicated. During replication, the normal doubling of chromosomes occurs, but colchicine prevents normal separation of the chromosomes into two cells. The cell then is left twice (or more then) the normal chromosome count. … experiments concluded that polyploids contained higher concentrations of the ‘active ingredient’. …Polyploid Cannabis has been found to be larger, with larger leaves and flowers.”
  • A 95-page 2009 paper by Sam R. Zwenger is titled, “The Biotechnology of Cannabis sativa.”  Zwenger gives complete instructions for marijuana tissue culture and genetic modification.
  • Robert C. Clarke, in his book Marijuana Botany: The propagation and breeding of distinctive cannabis, explains, “Many clandestine cultivators have started polyploid strains with colchicine….  (Colchicine) treated plants showed a 166-250% increase in THC…possibly colchicine or the resulting polyploidy interferes with cannabinoid biogenesis to favor THC.”
Robert C Clarke is the co-founder and lead botanist of Netherlands-based Hortapharm
Hortpharm research is behind “Project CBD”, dedicated to developing the high Cannabinoid, low THC varieties favored by the doctor in Santa Monica.  The Project CBD website explains:
“In the spring of 1998, the British government licensed a company called GW Pharmaceuticals to grow Cannabis and develop a precisely consistent plant extract for use in clinical trials. GW's co-founder Geoffrey Guy, MD, was convinced —and had convinced the Home Office— that by using CBD-rich plants, GW could produce a Cannabis-based medicine with little or no psychoactive effect. That summer Guy described his approach at a meeting of the International Cannabinoid Research Society…. It was assumed that generations of breeding for maximum THC had reduced CBD in California cannabis to trace levels. GW had gotten its CBD-rich strains by acquiring the genetic library of HortaPharm, a Dutch seed company run by American ex-pat naturalists, David Watson and Robert Clarke…..”
In other words, Project CBD got its genetic library from the guy who literally wrote the book on genetically modified marijuana.
GW Pharmaceuticals—the company behind Project CBD-- is producing Sativex, approved in Canada and several European countries allegedly for the treatment of seizures related to Multiple Sclerosis.  But this is not the same as “synthetic marijuana.”  TheFix.com explains: “Sativex is a proprietary extract of the marijuana plant, while Spice, K2 and the other cannabis substitutes are synthetic versions of various molecules found in marijuana.”  Synthetic cannabinoids used in K2 and Spice are derived from the published results of mid-1990s  experiments at Clemson University
This writer first pointed to online descriptions of techniques to create Genetically Modified Marijuana back in 2004.
