Good to know! Thanks!
ReplyDeletewell, thanks for the alert about the #8, but seems not accurate if they do not have to be labeled as such.
ReplyDeletelooking for the number nine is easy, but then so is shopping in the organic section. verify by code having 9 in front. But this really does not help in realistic sense.
Just because it's in the organic section does not mean it's organic, do your research on what qualifies a product to carry the label "organic", it's not much! Basic rule of thumb, if you bought it in a box, bag, or can, it's very far from organic :(
DeleteORGANIC refers to the way it was given nutrients and grown... it can still come from a GMO seed and be grown with organic gardening methods
DeleteYou are wrong Clint Davidson. ORGANIC means that it can NOT be altered or modified in ANY way at ANY time during the growing process. You can not have ORGANIC produce from modified seeds..it would then become a MODIFIED food, even if it IS "organically" grown.
Deleteit can still have meds and what not....basically everything is contaminated....organic stuff just less i guess
DeleteYes, that is how WHOLE FOODS told me to identify Organic from the poison!

ReplyDeleteCertified organic products are the best option for consumers
ReplyDeleteThe USDA Organic Rule states that "The use of genetically engineered organisms and their products are prohibited in any form or at any stage in organic production, processing or handling." Consumers can rest assured that Certified Organic means that a rigorous process has been followed which consumers can count on to avoid food that is produced with antibiotics, synthetic hormones and pesticides and GMOs.
Since organic can represent a real price hike, look for groceries that label produce as "pesticide-free." It's a great way to go and is generally much cheaper than organic because of the high costs of getting organic certification.
ReplyDeleteTo my mind the price differential between certified organic and conventional produce is negligible if I take into account the fact that by eating organic as much as possible (and, better yet, local organic!)I will not unknowingly be ingesting a GMO product and in most cases will be eating food with more vitamin and mineral content. I would rather make choices that are pro-health for me AND the planet, rather than feed my dollars into the medical industry.

ReplyDeleteCan we talk about the real problem? Produce does not come from a grocery store! It is grown. No I am not being sarcastic. If we don't understand that Monsanto's end game is to control all seeds we are still being naive. At some point NO store may be able to carry "organic" because there will be none. In the EU they tried to get all seeds confiscated. And then the EU would only allow the "approved" seeds to be grown. And they wanted all seeds. Even from individual gardens. Real protection will only come with us growing whatever we can. I use a balcony of a one bedroom apartment. I sprout in my kitchen. Do not be lulled into "buying organic". Demand that we keep our seeds.
ReplyDeleteAhhh a sane voice in all the confusion. I agree but wherever I cannot grow a particular item, I buy it locally from local farmers
DeleteAGREE 100%!!! I will not give up my RIGHT as a resident of this planet to GROW MY OWN FOOD FROM MY OWN SEEDS!!! I am in the process of doing just this right now!!!
DeleteI agree about what Bridget Robertson is saying, seeds' problem is a problem that should be better know.
ReplyDeleteI agree, seeds' problem is a problem that should be better known.
ReplyDeleteEric: Pesticide-free is not chemical fertilizer-free or GMO-free.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bridget. Grow your own from heirloom seeds and be vigilant of our right to use and store those seeds. Keep pressure on your elected officials.
Find out what companies use Monsanto crops, and DON'T BUY THEM/ Hit them where it counts.
let's get it clear starting from the basics. US certifies the land that farmer uses to grow organic food, after three years of no pesticides. It takes about 15 years to have realistic pesticide free land. I also agree with the previous comment, what comes in the box cannot be organic. Want organic food, grow it yourself or buy it from the farmers market, it is most likely to be somewhat organic.
ReplyDeleteMonsanto geneticallly modified crops is only the tip of the iceberg.
The #8 labelling is absolutely inaccurate. No grocery store labels corn with the #8 bar code and we all know that all corn, unless certified organic is GMO.
ReplyDeleteNo, the 5-digit PLU codes on produce do not tell you what is genetically modified or natural. These numbers, organized by the Produce Marketing Association, have nothing to do with you. According to Kathy Means, Association Vice President of Public Relations and Government Affairs, this is an optional convention for retailers and their supplier and is not designed as a communication tool for customers.
ReplyDeleteeven seeds is an issue unless you buy from heritage stores... yates is out GMO
ReplyDeleteHow can you tell if it's GMO, Conventional, or Organic when it's already bagged? Is there a way to tell by the bar code? For instance, Russet Potatoes 5 lbs bag.
ReplyDeleteI worked on an organic farm in Oregon for awhile and everything we grew was Oregon Tilthe certified organic. Seeds were organic, fertilizers, even pest control. Depending on the area of the US you live in, you might very well find produce labeled "Certified Organic by 'ABC'" or whatever. On the west coast you will find the Oregon Tilthe label on many products and can rely on it to be correct.
ReplyDeleteIm wondering if any of you smart folks actually understand exactly what a "GMO" is? From the looks of it, not many of you seem to have a grasp on GMO foods...GMO's have been around for thousands of years ( think of the banana and the orange carrot for starters)..not many veggies you put in to your stomachs are inface " non GMO" foods...that said, not many but very rarely are he foods you buy "organic' either...keep drinking ip that kool aid lol
ReplyDeleteYou should read an article called "The Illusion of Genetically Modified Food Safety" by David Schubert, PhD. He is a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. It's very informative and explaines about Bt and NEPs which are being inserted into the DNA of the GMO plants. This has not been around for thousands of years and is the problem that we are all talking about when we think of todays GMO foods.
